Facebook, with its global reach and scale, is including African developers in its beta testing programme for the launch of new global products and features as it increases its presence and deepens its partnerships on the continent.

F8 hosts more than 2,600 people and hundreds of thousands of people watching via Facebook Live for two days of new products, tools, interactive demos and speakers to help developers build, grow and monetize their apps. And, more than 70% of Facebook’s developer partners are located outside the United States and about a third of the attendees at F8 joined us from abroad.

“We believe that local entrepreneurs and developers will be the ones to meet the needs of their immediate community, and we are working with developers to know how we can support them in doing so,” says Emeka Afigbo, Strategic Product Partnerships Manager at Facebook. “We are listening to our developer partners in Africa, and the strong showing for F8 is a reflection of our commitment to doing more with our partners across the continent to help them build products and businesses.”

African developers who partnered with Facebook to launch products at F8 include Afrinolly (Entertainment, Nigeria), GumTree South Africa (Classifieds, South Africa),vZikoko (Entertainment, Nigeria), Jobberman (Jobs, Nigeria/Ghana), The Net (Entertainment, Nigeria) and My Music (Media, Nigeria).

In addition, this year Facebook brought F8 to developers around the world through F8 Meetups hosted with tech hubs around the world. In Africa, we hosted F8 Meetups in Nairobi, Lagos, Cape Town and Morocco where participants watched the sessions in San Francisco.

Two developer teams from Malawi won a developer challenge supported by mobile operator TNM Malawi and Facebook, and were featured on F8’s international stage. Maternitech, founded by three 22-year olds – Walter Moyo, Thandie Magasa, and Daniel Mvalo, provides educational information aimed at combating Malawi’s high under-18 pregnancy rate. The team was featured in an international livestream interview.

Talk To Me, an app created by 10-year old Panashe Jere, who learned to code at a Coding for Kids session at Malawi Hub. This app converts input text into voice so children always have someone to talk to. Both teams were congratulated by Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg personally for their achievements.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group President, Akinwumi Adesina, will visit Mozambique and Malawi on April 4-5, 2016. While in Malawi, he will hold high-level discussions with Malawi President Peter Mutharika.

A Nigerian national, Adesina is the 8th elected President of the AfDB Group. He is a distinguished economist and agriculture expert and has been at the centre of agriculture transformation in Nigeria where he served as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2010 to 2015. He was previously Vice-President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). He was also Associate Director at the Rockefeller Foundation in New York, where he worked in senior leadership positions, including as Regional Office Director and Representative for Southern Africa.

Since assuming office as AfDB President in September 2015, Adesina has spearheaded actions by the Bank to drive inclusive and green growth for Africa, in areas of high-impact, building strategic partnerships and mobilizing resources to scale up initiatives and operations on the continent. He has sharply focused the Bank’s work on five top priorities for Africa, or the High 5s: Light up and power Africa; Feed Africa, Industrialize Africa; Integrate Africa; and Improve the quality of life for the people of Africa.

The President’s visit comes a few weeks after a group of nine AfDB Executive Directors visited Malawi from March 6-11, 2016. The visit by the President is seen as consolidating the long-standing partnership between the African Development Bank Group and Malawi.

March 15, 2016/AfDB

A team of nine African Development Bank Executive Directors visited Malawi from March 6 to 11, 2016 on a high-level consultation and dialogue mission. During their visit, the Executive Directors met with President Arthur Peter Mutharika, Finance Minister Goodall Gondwe, Cabinet Ministers, Reserve Bank Governor Charles Chuka, the Speaker of Parliament, Richard Msowoya, senior government officials, representatives of the private sector and civil society, and development partners.

The Executive Directors noted with concern two major challenges facing Malawi – the difficult macro-economic situation, which is manifested in high inflation, depreciated currency, high interest rates and low growth as well as the severe food crisis arising from weather shocks. However, they commended the Government for its tenacity in tackling the challenges under difficult circumstances.

They underscored the need to sustain the reform effort, particularly in fiscal policy and Public Financial Management to restore macroeconomic stability and instill private sector confidence.

The Executive Directors reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to assist Malawi build resilience and achieve sustainable development, through targeted support for irrigation, other key infrastructure especially energy and transport, and private sector development and policy advice. The Bank will support Malawi’s efforts to expand domestic resource mobilization and eventually wean the country from dependence on aid.

While in Malawi, the Executive Directors visited selected social sector, road infrastructure and irrigation projects to get an understanding of the impact the Bank financed projects are making in promoting economic growth and reducing poverty in the country. Specifically, they visited Monkey Bay Rural Growth Centre, where they were able to appreciate the implementation and achievements of the Local Economic Development Project.

Projects financed under the Nacala Corridor Development project – namely Liwonde-Mangochi and the Lilongwe West Bypass Road, as well as the Zomba-Blantyre Trunk Road Project – were among the projects visited by the team. Both the Blantyre-Zomba Road and the Lilongwe West Bypass Road have been successfully completed and opened to traffic while construction on the Liwonde- Mangochi Road is planned to start later this year.

They also visited Chisoka Health Centre in Thyolo district, which was constructed with support from the African Development Bank under the Malawi Health Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) programme. The Bank’s support has had significant impact on the health and livelihoods in a catchment area of 27,000 people in 18 villages.

In the meeting with development partners including diplomatic missions, the Executive Directors discussed a number of challenges and opportunities to improve the country’s economy. In the short-term, they noted that it was important for the country to manage the macro-economic situation and reduce inflation and interest rates in order to attract private sector investment. In the medium- to long-term, emphasis should be placed on investment in infrastructure and irrigated agriculture to build resilience and enhance productivity. The Bank, in collaboration with other development partners, will continue to support the Government’s socio-economic development initiatives.

In their engagement with representatives of the civil society and private sector, they expressed their satisfaction with the civil society’s participation and urged them to continue to promote good governance in the country. CSOs, they said, play a significant role in the implementation of development activities particularly those targeting the poor and vulnerable.

In discussions with the Bankers Association of Malawi and Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Executive Directors noted the challenges faced by the private sector, among which is lack of access to credit. The AfDB will strive to deepen collaboration with the Government and local financial institutions to enhance financial inclusion.

Describing their visit as “extremely fruitful and insightful”, the Executive Directors expressed their appreciation of the warm welcome and excellent hospitality accorded to them by the Government and people of Malawi.
