<p style="text-align: justify;">Occasionally, a technology advancement comes along that can change the game for the way an entire business function is performed. E-commerce software moved selling from brick-and-mortar stores to the Web. Enterprise resource planning systems integrated multiple business department functions into single real-time operations. And now the advancement of mobile technology that has given rise to today’s mobile-first consumer is transforming the level of security and peace of mind for cashless payments.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">This advancement forms the foundation of a strategic <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/feb/25/mastercards-new-phone-location-technology-aims-to-kill-abroad" target="_blank">relationship</a> between MasterCard and Syniverse, and it was recently reflected in the <a href="http://newsroom.mastercard.com/press-releases/mastercard-expands-cardholder-controls-and-peace-of-mind/" target="_blank">announcement</a> of set of expanded services by MasterCard that give cardholders greater control and peace of mind. Our <a href="http://newsroom.mastercard.com/press-releases/mastercard-and-syniverse-deliver-peace-of-mind-for-mobile-users/" target="_blank">collaboration </a>is yet one more example of a new age of innovation for mobile technology and payment card service capabilities that is considerably strengthening the security of payment card transactions and improving the convenience of making cashless transactions.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Syniverse is particularly suited to play a central role in this innovation. From our position at the center of the mobile ecosystem, we have an unparalleled capability to bridge mobile service providers with other kinds of companies to enable the secure transmission of massive amounts of mobile data. We now connect more than 1,000 operators and nearly 600 other enterprises in almost 200 countries. And our reach provides connections to more than 6 billion mobile devices around the world.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">With our capabilities, Syniverse has been working with MasterCard to develop services to enhance peace of mind for MasterCard customers when they travel abroad, and to address a common challenge for cardholders in general. The challenge is that, surprisingly, up to 80 percent of the payment transactions that are declined while people travel abroad are actually legitimate, which creates a big headache for consumers, retailers and financial institutions alike.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The MasterCard and Syniverse solution takes on this challenge by using geolocation at a country level to reduce fraudulent activity and false declines. Our joint solution, following a consumer’s explicit opt-in, uses geolocation data from a consumer’s mobile device to inform their bank when they are in a new country, so the bank will enable transactions that they make abroad.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Consider when a traveler at a department store in a foreign country attempts to buy a coat. At checkout, when the card transaction is initiated, the traveler’s bank detects that a purchase is being attempted outside her home country. Often, this could result in the transaction being declined and the cardholder having an embarrassing customer experience. She may have to pull out another card to complete the transaction or even use cash to pay. Now, however, this kind of “false positive” transaction denial can be avoided when cardholders opt in to a geolocation service, like the MasterCard and Syniverse solution.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The service has been launched in the U.K. and aims to reduce consumers’ frustrations related to having their transactions unnecessarily declined when trying to make purchases in another country, as well as having their payment cards used without their knowledge.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">We look forward to continuing to build this capability and other services with MasterCard. The advancement in today’s mobile technology and rise of today’s mobile-empowered consumer have truly opened a new era of innovation for cashless payments. MasterCard and Syniverse see great potential in advanced services, and we expect they will go a long way toward providing greater peace of mind for cardholders.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Ever thought you’d hear runway and MasterCard in the same sentence? Well, now you just might.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The fashion and technology worlds are colliding faster than ever before. At the intersection of this collision is <a href="http://newsroom.mastercard.com/press-releases/mastercard-and-parsons-school-of-design-partner-to-put-digital-payments-on-trend-through-fashion-design-hack/" target="_blank">MasterCard and Parsons School of Design</a>, who recently teamed up to make payment technology fashion-forward.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This past weekend, the two organizations went avant-garde to kickoff the first-ever MasterCard/Parsons sponsored <a href="https://citia.com/content/organization/mastercard/views/fashion-and-design?i=lfR3YO#payinstyle" target="_blank">Fashion and Design Hack</a> in which teams of students competed to develop payment-enabled style.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I know what you’re thinking: what could possibly be vogue about payment-wear? Back in October, fashion designer <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/28/fashion/adam-selman-rihanna-designer-designs-wearable-computing.html?_r=0" target="_blank">Adam Selman</a> rocked the industry with the first-ever payment-enabled dress and like that…payment technology became catwalk eye candy.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Moving forward with Selman’s vision, Parson’s students took on the challenge to create their own payment-enabled designs. Sophomore Daniel Park described the opportunity as “making payments personal.” Shriva Chandrasekhar, a senior at Parson’s said, “Bringing fashion and technology together is a necessity. I worked in technology before and now that I’m studying at Parson’s I know exactly what is missing in fashion that can be solved for with technology.”</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">From payment-enabled eyewear to footwear, the competition was fierce. So fierce that our esteemed panel of judges (<u><a href="http://adamselman.com" target="_blank">Adam Selman</a></u>, Fashion Designer; <u><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/bzitron" target="_blank">Barnett Zitron</a></u>, Managing Director, <u><a href="http://img.com/home.aspx" target="_blank">MADE</a></u>, a WME I IMG company; <u><a href="https://www.newschool.edu/facultyexperts/faculty.aspx?id=109831" target="_blank">Burak Cakmak</a></u>, Dean, School of Fashion,<a href="http://www.newschool.edu/parsons/" target="_blank"> <u>Parsons</u></a>; and <u><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/sherrihaymond" target="_blank">Sherri Haymond</a></u>, Senior Vice President, Digital Payments &amp; Labs, <u><a href="https://www.mastercard.us/en-us.html" target="_blank">MasterCard</a></u>) couldn’t agree on crowning just one champion. And so, three talented teams were named the winners of the Fashion &amp; Design Hack and each went home with $8,000 in prize money and MasterCard’s commitment to help bring their ideas to market:</p>
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li>Team 6, the dynamic trio that believes payment-enabled soles are made for shopping;</li>
<li>Team 4, who pushed the limit of human interaction by creating a way to pay with a handshake; and</li>
<li>Team 3, who created funky sunglasses with embedded payment capabilities</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;">“Instead of technology further distancing us from human interaction we want to use the chip to encourage real-time connections,” said Team 4 member Stephanie Hazlewood. Technology that facilities a genuine consumer experience? Now that’s paying in style!</p>

<p><strong>Integrated Offering Enables Consumer Experience and Enhances Protection</strong></p>
<p>Building on decades of delivering security-focused innovations, MasterCard today announced plans to raise the bar on everyday peace of mind, creating global consistency across a series of controls and alerts offered to cardholders.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The features – which deliver greater convenience and real-time access to account information — are offered to help protect issuers, merchants and cardholders from fraud.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">“Our cardholders want even greater control of their money, no matter where or how they are spending,” said <a href="http://newsroom.mastercard.com/people/ajaybhalla/">Ajay Bhalla</a>, president of Enterprise Security Solutions at MasterCard. “For 50 years, we’ve developed new technologies that balance the need for increased security with the desire for greater convenience in payments. As these benefits become everyday features, consumers will receive even more protection and value from the MasterCard in their wallet– physical or digital.”</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Knowing Where You Are: Mobile Location Alerts</strong><br />
To reduce frustrations associated with potential declines when using their card outside of “normal” routines, MasterCard is making verification of the cardholder as easy as turning on your mobile phone. In partnership with <a href="http://zumigo.com/">Zumigo</a>, MasterCard will offer a mobile app-based solution that delivers location alerts triggered by pre-set digital boundaries whenever cardholders travel domestically and internationally.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This adds to the company’s ongoing activities with Syniverse which leverages mobile network roaming data to verify the cardholder’s location.  Currently available for UK cardholders with phones through EE and other key mobile network operators, the program continues to expand to additional markets across the globe.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Seamless Service for Recurring Charges</strong><br />
Each payment card has an expiration date to help ensure the ability to update to the latest technologies and security protections. However, this has also meant that cardholders would need to update their account information for recurring subscriptions, monthly gym memberships and other recurring bill payments when the new card is issued. To eliminate this inconvenience – and the potential for an interruption in service – MasterCard will offer its Automatic Billing Updater (ABU) service globally to seamlessly provide the new account information.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Putting Cardholders In Control </strong><br />
Since 2007, MasterCard has offered the In Control platform, providing real-time account alerts via SMS or e-mail that help cardholders set spending limits and “turn on” or “turn off” their credit, debit and small business cards at certain merchants or in certain geographies.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Each issuing bank can choose the most appropriate features and benefits for their cardholders. The cardholders can then access In Control either through the bank’s mobile app and website or at a standalone site.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">“Consumers who take advantage of security features like transaction monitoring, email alerts and credit freezes could see their stolen information being used for 75 percent longer by fraudsters,” said <a href="https://www.javelinstrategy.com/member/al-pascual">Al Pascual</a>, senior vice president and head of fraud and security, Javelin Strategy &amp; Research. “These tools will help detect fraud more quickly.”</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Today’s news adds to the November 2014 global extension of the <a href="http://newsroom.mastercard.com/press-releases/mastercard-expands-consumer-protection-across-the-globe-2/">Zero Liability promise</a> protecting consumer and small business cardholders from unauthorized transactions as of early second quarter 2016.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">At MasterCard, safety comes first, as demonstrated by a long history of leading the industry through investment and innovation that delivers multiple layers of technology – like EMV, <a href="https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/issuers/products-and-solutions/grow-manage-your-business/digital-commerce-solutions.html">tokenization</a>, <a href="http://newsroom.mastercard.com/press-releases/mastercard-identity-check-to-simplify-and-strengthen-online-shopping/">biometrics</a>, MasterCard <a href="http://newsroom.mastercard.com/press-releases/mastercard-launches-solution-to-protect-against-cyber-hacking-of-banks-and-processors-in-europe/">Safety Net</a> – to protect each and every transaction. As a result, MasterCard has become the safest, simplest and smartest way to pay.</p>
