Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote has instituted legal action against Zambia’s Labour Minister, Fackson Shamenda, claiming $17, 728 damages over alleged defamation of character.
According to the processes in the suit filed at the country’s High Court, Dangote, through one of his companies, Dangote Industries Zambia, is seeking an order of the court compelling the said Minister to pay damages to his company for defamation of character over bribery allegation.
On September 15, the Post Newspaper in Zambia had carried a story under the headline “Dangote offers Shamenda a bribe” in which the Minister claimed that a Nigerian human resources manager from the company offered him a bribe which he rejected.
“He told me that it was a tradition in their culture to give someone a token of appreciation,” Shamenda was quoted as saying.
