The 2014 Capital Market Committee (CMC) Retreat and Conference, an annual event of the Capital Market Community will hold between 26th and 28th November 2014 at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja with the Government Agencies and the Private Organisations as Sponsors.
The CMC is an industry-wide committee comprising representatives of SEC NIGERIA, representatives of Capital Market Operators and Trade Groups and other stakeholders. The CMC meets every quarter to deliberate on various issues affecting the market and other policy matters.
The theme for the retreat is “Capital Market – Creating Wealth and Opportunity”. This year’s retreat is expected to bring into focus strategies for converting the gains of the GDP re-basing into wealth distribution through the Capital Market. The Retreat will also unveil the Capital Market Master Plan.
The official opening ceremony of the retreat is scheduled to hold on Thursday November 27, 2014 with notable personalities as the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Sen. Bala Mohammed among others as special guests.
The Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Ms. Arunma Oteh, and her Executive Team, Chief Executive Officers of Capital Trade Points such as the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the Abuja Securities and Commodities Exchange, leaders of capital trade groups such as the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, Association of Issuing Houses of Nigeria; Association of Corporate Trustees, Capital Market Solicitors Association, Association of Asset Custodians, the Registrars, Fund Managers and Reporting Accountants will be at the event
The Capital Market Committee (CMC) was mainly established to serve as a medium for exchange of ideas among market stakeholders as well as receiving feedbacks on previous policies and setting agenda for the future.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Nigeria was established in 1979 as the apex regulator of the Nigerian capital market. It is a Federal Government statutory body supervised by the Federal Ministry of Finance.
Its activities are currently governed by the Investments and Securities Act (ISA) 2007. The SEC has the overarching mandate of investor protection, ensuring orderly and equitable dealings in securities, developing the market and shielding it from all forms of abuses.
In regulating the market, the Commission undertakes the following activities meant to protect investors, market operators and ensure market integrity: Registration of securities and market intermediaries to ensure that only fit and proper persons/institutions are allowed to operate in the market; Surveillance over exchanges / capital trade points / trading systems to forestall breaches of market rules as well as deter and detect unfair manipulations and practices which may cause market disruption and; Investigate alleged breaches of the laws and regulations governing the capital market and enforce sanctions where appropriate.
