Lagos (INVESTADVOCATE)-Union Bank of Nigeria Plc (UBN) on Tuesday alerted its customers via short message service (sms) and email on the activities of fraudsters asking them to click on a link in order to update their Bank Verification Number (BVN) records.
“If you receive any such mails DO NOT click on link and delete immediately,” the lender warned in a text message to its customers.
Part of an email sent out to customers to alert them of this scam reads thus “We have been alerted to fraudulent mail with the subject “Important BVN update for online banking users” notifying customers that their online banking account is overdue for BVN update since June 1, 2015 and their online banking access will be blocked if the Online Banking is not update.
According to Union Bank, the purpose of this scam is to lure customers to click on the link to a fraudulent internet banking website, where their details would be captured and credentials would be used to commit fraud.
The bank says its login pages for its online banking platform are encrypted and a locked padlock or unbroken key symbol will always appear in client’s browser when accessing the platform.
“Also note that the bank will never ask you to disclose or confirm sensitive banking or card details by email SMS or telephone,” the bank added.
