Mastercard and PayPal have had a long-standing partnership that has just expanded in the U.S. Using your Mastercard in PayPal will get a whole lot easier. So what does all of this mean?

Below are three things you need to know:

  1. Masterpass will be integrated into Braintree, expanding the Masterpass digital acceptance footprint and providing merchants a simple way to add Masterpass as a payment option
  2. Mastercard will be a clear and equal payment option within PayPal, and PayPal will no longer steer Mastercard cardholders to ACH
  3. PayPal will leverage Mastercard tokenization to expand their presence at the point of sale in an issuer-friendly way that enables secure, pass-through Mastercard transactions at contactless-enabled merchants.Ajay Banga Quoteboard

Our thoughtful approach to the partnership with PayPal helps propel the Mastercard digital agenda, as well as that of our partners, by expanding our digital acceptance footprint both in browser and in-app with top digital merchants. The partnership will also help issuers drive and maintain top of wallet positioning with this important ecommerce leader by encouraging consumers to add a Mastercard debit card to a previously linked ACH account, and maintaining that top of wallet positioning for both debit and credit cards by protecting against targeting.  Consumers also will be able to cash-out balances from their PayPal accounts instantly to a Mastercard debit card. This is exciting news for Mastercard as we look to continuously provide increased value to our cardholders, financial institutional and PayPal customers.
