The world is experiencing difficult times following the outbreak of COVID – 19. With economic and social activities continuing to bear the woes of this pandemic, stock markets have also received their fair share of bearish runs within this period.
The onslaught of the COVID – 19 pandemic raised economic concerns throughout the globe and Nigeria, hence, investors sold off on many investment positions as NSE-ASI lost c.32% (from a peak of 10.4% in January 2020 to a low of 21.4% in March 2020).
However, this has created decent entry points in some stocks. What we have noticed so far is; prices of some stocks are now very cheap, making it impossible for savvy investors to look away. It reminds us of the saying: “Markets are in cycles” – there will be downs, which will be followed by ups. It is easy to explain this move by investors using the words of Warren Buffet, one of the world’s most renowned investors: “Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful”.
While we have seen a recent uptick in the market and in the price of some quality names, especially in the banking sector, which has gained c.17% so far in April, some sectors such as Telecommunication, Consumer Goods and Agriculture are yet to reflect investors’ interests in the same light. Based on the importance of these sectors to our needs in this period, we believe some of the companies within these sectors are well positioned to thrive in these trying times. Bottom-line, there has never been a better time to consider looking at some of these names in a bid to ride the upward curve.
