Bulls Sustain Hold as Nigerian Equities Inch Higher +0.2% on Blue Chips Gain

EQUITIES

The bulls continued to dominate the local bourse, as buying interests in GUINNESS (+10.0%), DANGSUGAR (+3.3%), and GTCO (+0.7%) drove the All-Share Index higher by 0.2% to 142,263.07 points. Consequently, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled higher at +1.4% and +38.2%, respectively.

The total volume traded declined by 67.6% to 325.11 million units, valued at NGN8.42 billion and exchanged in 22,779 deals. ACCESSCORP was the most traded stock by volume at 37.24 million units, while ZENITHBANK was the most traded stock by value at NGN1.60 billion.

Sectoral performance was mixed as the Consumer Goods (+0.8%) and Oil & Gas (+0.3%) indices advanced, while the Insurance (-1.1%) and Banking (-0.2%) indices declined. The Industrial Goods index remained unchanged.

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was positive (1.6x), as 29 tickers gained relative to 18 losers. GUINNESS (+10.0%) and REGALINS (+9.8%) led the gainers, while SOVRENINS (-6.2%) and OMATEK (-5.2%) recorded the most significant losses of the day.

CURRENCY

The official FX rate appreciated by 0.3% to NGN1,494.00/USD.

MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME

The overnight lending rate expanded by 9bps to 27.0% in the absence of any significant funding pressure on the system.

The NTB secondary market was bullish, as the average yield contracted by 6bps to 18.4%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-1bp), mid (-1bp) and long (-12bps) segments, driven by the demand for the 91DTM (-1bp),182DTM (-1bp), and 350DTM (-73bps) bills, respectively. Similarly, the average yield contracted by 1bp to 22.2% in the OMO segment.

Elsewhere, proceedings in the FGN bond secondary market was quiet, as the average yield closed flat at 16.5%.
