Bulls Sustain Hold as Nigerian Equities Gain +0.5%, Driven by Bellwether Counters

EQUITIES

The bulls continue to dominate the local bourse as gains in DANGCEM (+4.3%), STANBIC (+9.0%), PRESCO (+6.2%) and WAPCO (+4.1%) drove the All-Share index higher by 0.5% to 159,951.08 points. Thus, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled higher at +2.8%.

The total volume traded advanced by 9.1% to 758.98 million units, valued at NGN19.87 billion, and exchanged in 54,212 deals. LINKASSURE was the most traded stock by volume at 51.63 million units while GTCO was the most traded stock by value at NGN2.04 billion.

On sectors, performance was mixed as the Insurance (+3.8%) and Industrial Goods (+2.7%) indices advanced, while the Oil & Gas (-2.6%), Consumer Goods (-0.5%) and Banking (-0.1%) indices declined.

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was positive (3.2x), as 60 tickers gained relative to 24 losers. JAIZBANK (+10.0%) and MEYER (+10.0%) led the gainers, while ALEX (-10.0%) and LEARNAFRCA (-9.2%) led the laggards.

CURRENCY

The official FX rate depreciated by 4bps to NGN 1,429.85/USD.

MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME

The overnight lending rate remained unchanged at 22.7% despite inflows from OMO maturities (NGN1.37 trillion).

The NTB secondary market traded on a bearish note as the average yield expanded by 19bps to 17.7%. Across the curve, the average yield expanded at the short (+2bps), mid (+13bps) and long (+32bps) segments driven by the selloffs of the 79DTM (+21bps), 135DTM (+26bps) and 338DTM (+52bps) bills, respectively. Conversely, the average yield contracted by 5bps to 21.6% in the OMO segment.

Elsewhere, the FGN bond secondary market traded on a quiet note albeit with a bearish tilt, as the average yield expanded by 1bp to 16.5%. Across the curve, the average yield expanded at the short (+3bps) end, driven by sell pressures on the FEB-2031 (+10bps) bond, but remained unchanged at the mid and long segments.
