Nigerian Stocks Sustain Bullish Run +0.8% Eight Straight Session on Bellwether Gains

EQUITIES

The domestic equities market sustained its bullish momentum, closing higher for the eighth consecutive session. Gains in NESTLE (+10.0%), GTCO (+4.5%), MTNN (+1.1%), and ZENITHBANK (+2.3%) lifted the All Share Index by 0.8% to 178,184.35 points, with Month to Date and Year to Date returns settling higher at 7.8% and 14.5%, respectively.

The total volume of trades declined by 27.9% to 939.15 million units, valued at NGN34.03 billion, and exchanged in 61,279 deals. TANTALIZER was the most traded stock by volume at 85.32 million units, while ARADEL was the most traded stock by value at NGN2.98 billion.

On sectors, the Banking (+1.6%), Insurance (+1.5%), and Consumer Goods (+1.3%) indices closed higher, while the Industrial Goods and Oil & Gas indices closed flat.

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was positive (1.5x), as 47 tickers gained relative to 31 losers. NESTLE (+10.0%) and MEYER (+10.0%) led the gainers, while HONYFLOUR (-9.7%) and NEIMETH (-9.1%) posted the most significant losses of the day.

CURRENCY

The official FX rate appreciated by 0.4% to NGN1,350.00/USD.

MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME

The overnight lending rate contracted by 10bps to 22.8% in the absence of funding pressures on the system.

Activities in the Treasury bills secondary market were bullish, as the average yield contracted by 3bps to 17.5%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-2bps), mid (-7bps) and long (-2bps) segments due to the demand for the 43DTM (-7bps), 99DTM (-25bps) and 358DTM (-41bps) bills, respectively. Similarly, the average yield contracted by 7bps to 21.6% in the OMO segment.

Elsewhere, the FGN bond secondary market traded on a bearish note, as the average yield expanded by 1bp to 15.9%. Across the benchmark curve, the average yield expanded at the mid (+3bps) segment, driven by sell pressures on the JUL-2034 (+15bps) bond, but remained unchanged at the short and long end.
