Citibank gets new chairman, directors

Citibank Nigeria Limited has announced the appointment of Mr. Olayemi Cardoso as the new Chairman of the bank’s Board of Directors. In addition, Citi Nigeria named Mr. Michael Murray-Bruce and Dr. Hilary Onyiuke as new non-executive directors.

The new appointments were announced following the retirement of Chief Charles Sankey, who previously served as chairman and board members, Alhaji Mohammed Koguna and Chief Edet Amana, the bank said in a statement on Friday.

Chief Sankey was the pioneer chairman of the bank and served on the board for 26 years. Chief Amana and Alhaji Koguna were also boards member for 26 years.

Global Commercial Banking Head, Mr. Emeka Okonkwo, Corporate and Investment Bank Head, Mr. Omar Hafeez and Mr. Tariq Masaud, Country Risk Officer, were named executive directors.

Cardoso holds a first degree in Finance and Accounting from Aston University, United Kingdom and a postgraduate degree in Public Administration and Management from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

He joined Citibank in Europe in 1981 and worked out of the West Africa Area office in Abidjan, prior to joining Citibank Nigeria in 1984 where he was a vice-president before leaving in 1990 to work as an executive director of Citizens International Bank. Between 1999 and 2004, Cardoso was co-opted into Public Service as the Lagos State Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget.

In 2007, he was appointed the chairman of the Board’s Audit Committee of Citibank Nigeria Limited. He became a director of the bank in April 2010. Cardoso has over the years served on the board of directors of several companies including Chevron Oil Plc. He is currently the only African elected board member at the Harvard Kennedy school alumni governing body and consults on financial and developmental activities.

Onyiuke holds an M.B. B.S. degree from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. He is a fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, and a member of the American board of Neurosurgeons.

He is currently an Associate Professor, Neurosurgery Division at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

Murray-Bruce holds a B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Queen Mary College, University of London, England and an MBA in Finance/International Business from Columbia University, New York, United States. He is the Managing Director of Domino Stores Limited. He sits on the board of several companies.

Okonkwo was appointed head of Citibank Nigeria Bank Limited’s Global

Commercial Bank business in August 2007 and has responsibility for all credit and marketing activities in Citi’s commercial banking business in Nigeria. Prior to this, he worked as a Senior Analyst with the Citigroup Public Sector Group in London; where he focused on identifying and proposing investment opportunities within the Public Sector/Government space in Africa.
