The National Insurance Commission’s Steering Committee made up of chief executive officers of insurance companies has identified the strengthening of the agency system as a means of deepening compulsory insurance in the country.
The committee agreed on this after a meeting to strategise on best ways to implement and enforce the five compulsory insurance policies under the Market Development and Restructuring Initiative.
The Consultant, MDRI, Chief Yemi Soladoye, said, “To be able to make a good meaning out of the programme, agents will be a veritable medium for reaching the expected target.â€ÂÂ
He also noted that the MDRI project was an industry affair.
For underwriters to be able to train and retain agents for reasonable productivity, Soladoye said steps should be taken to ensure they were treated as part of the company and not made to feel that they had no career in the firm.
He said he saw nothing wrong in an agent rising to become an executive director or even the chief executive officer of an underwriting firm.
