Nigeria’s House of Rep seeks suspension of subsidy removal

ABUJA (INVESTADVOCATE)-Members of the Nigeria’s Peoples House of Representatives at an emergency session Sunday in Abuja Nigeria is seeking to suspend the Fuel subsidy removal by the President Goodluck Jonathan led administration and had set up a Committee to meet with Members of the Executive Arm of Government and Leaders of Organised Labour.

Aminu Tambuwal Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representative at the end of the deliberation announced that that a Committee to look at the matter has been set up and would on Tuesday September 10 2012 meet with Members of Executive Arm and leaders of organised Labour.

According to the Honourable Members, after due consultation with the people of their constituencies, they have the mandate to pass a motion seeking the reversal of fuel subsidy removal.

Most of the Members who spoke were in favour of the reversal of the fuel subsidy removal.

With this motion passed by Members of the Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Organised Labour and Civil Society Group will in about 12 hours embark on an indefinite nationwide strike to press for the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Though some of them had dissenting views on the issues saying that President Jonathan should be given time to implement his programme based on the removal of the fuel subsidy.

One of the Representatives in this category is Henry Dickson of PDP Bayelsa State who said if the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) was passed, Nigeria wouldn’t have been in its current situation.

As earlier reported, Opeyemi Bamidele, the Chairman, Committee of the House of Representatives on Legislative Budget and Research, who represents Ado/Irepodun / Ifelodun Federal Constituency, said in a Statement that he would personally lead the protest on Tuesday against the removal of oil subsidy by President Goodluck in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital South West Nigeria.

Bamidele had described the new policy as killing and diversionary to the level of insecurity in Nigeria.
