Thousands of youths have reportedly converged on the Afrika Shrine in Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, set up by Femi Kuti, the son of Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, in protest against the withdrawal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.
The protesters said they had to exercise their rights to peaceful assembly and dared security agents to come and dislodge them.
Femi told domestic and foreign journalists that the people had a right to reject unpopular policies of the government.
He promised to lead them on a protest march to the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, about five kilometres away. The park was the scene of five days of public protests against the subsidy removal and was cordoned off by soldiers and policemen early on Monday.
As at 12.30pm, the youths at the shrine were chanting, “How many people soldier go kill?†and getting ready to march to Ojota to hold a peaceful rally.
