IFRS Takes Front Burner at CAMCAN Inauguration

The   Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of   the Financial Reporting Council of (FRC) Nigeria, Mr. Jim Obazee, will deliver a lecture entitled:  ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã‹Å“International Financial Reporting Standards Implementation: Implications for Nigerian Capital Markets’ at the inauguration ceremony of the new executive members of the Capital Market Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CAMCAN).

The event which will come up on Thursday, June 14, 2012 on the Floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) Building, Lagos will usher in the new executives of  the association to pilot  its  affairs   for the  next three years.

The new Exco comprise: Mr. Goddy Egene of Thisday Newspaper (President), Mrs. Chinyere Joel-Nwoakoma of News Agency of Nigeria (Vice-President), Mr. Friday Ekeoba of Nigerian Tribune Newspaper (General Secretary), Mr. Kayode Ogunwale of Daily Trust Newspaper (Assistant Secretary); Mr. Chris Ugwu of Leadership Newspapers (Financial Secretary) and Tolu  Osundolire of Nation Newspaper (Treasurer).

 CAMCAN   is the umbrella body for journalists in the print and electronic media reporting activities in the nation’s capital market.  It is body that is   committed to the enhancement of   the professional capability of its members and the promotion of   a virile Nigerian capital market  for the benefits of all stakeholders.

A statement from the CAMCAN Secretariat said the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Ms Arunma Oteh; the Chief Executive Officer of   the NSE, Mr. Oscar Onyema; leaders of trade groups and shareholders associations; chief executive officers of quoted companies  and othr stakeholders are  being expected to grace the inauguration ceremony.

The statement added that Obazee, who  has played very active roles in the development and issuance of accounting standards in Nigeria, will give insights into the implications of the implementation of the IFRS  for the capital market in particular and the economy generally.

 Obazee joined the Federal Civil Service in 1993 as Senior Manager and Head of the Technical Department at the defunct Nigerian Accounting Standards Board (NASB) now FRC and rose to become the Chief Executive Officer of the Board in November 2010.

In his role as accounting standard setter, he has been on attachment to the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), USA, Accounting Standards Board, Canada and at other times, on working visit to the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and Accounting Standards Board, United Kingdom.

Prior to joining the defunct NASB, Obazee worked as a lecturer of Accounting at the University of Benin from 1990 to 1993. He has served in many capacities including: External examiner to the department of Accounting, University of Benin; member of the Members’ Education Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria; Member of the Steering Committee on Small and Medium –Sized Entities Guidelines on Accounting (SMEGA) – Level 3 of the United Nations Conference on Trade And Development (UNCTAD), Chairman, National Committee on the Roadmap to the Adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards In Nigeria.

The FRC boss holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from the University of Benin, a Master of Science Degree in Accounting from the University of Lagos and a certification in Strategic Financial Analysis for Business Evaluation from Harvard University, USA. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and a professional member of the Nigerian Institute of Management and the American Accounting Association (AAA). He has so many written works, some of which have been published locally and internationally.
