Lagos (INVESTADVOCATE)-The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) Friday closed the with the All-Share Index (ASI) inching up by 5.88 percent (5.88%) to close the week.
Stock Market Report from the Nigeria’s Exchange made available to InvestAdvocate, shows that at the close of trading activities for the week ended May 03, 2013, the NSE All-Share Index rose by 1,950.25 basis points or 5.88% to close at 35,109.33.
While the market capitalisation of the listed equities on the mainboard advanced by 5.88% to close at N11.225 trillion. Similarly, the NSE 30 Index appreciated by 85.10 points or 5.37% to close at 1,668.67.
Other NSE sectoral indices also appreciated during the week: NSE Consumer Goods, NSE Banking, NSE Insurance, NSE-Lotus II and NSE Industrial Goods by 2.53%, 2.68%, 2.25%, 6.16% and 9.13% respectively.However,NSE Oil and Gas Index declined by 3.50%. Meanwhile, NSE-ASeM Index remained flat.
In terms of turnover, the NSE reported 1.511 billion shares worth of N15.867 billion in 20,965 deals were transacted this week by investors on the floor of the Exchange compared to a total of 1.758 billion shares valued at N17.898 billion that exchanged hands last week in 23,958 deals.
However, at the close of trading activities for the week, the Financial Services sector (measured by turnover volume) led the sectors and accounted for 1.261 billion shares valued at N10.855 billion exchanged hands by investors in 12,786 deals. Consumer Goods sector followed in the activity chart with 48.204 million shares valued at N3.224 billion traded in 3,427 deals.
Similarly, the Banking subsector of the Financial Services sector was the most active during the week (measured by turnover volume) with 1.090 billion shares worth N8.879 billion traded in 8,818 deals. Volume in the Banking subsector was largely driven by activities in the shares of UBA Plc, Unity Bank Plc and Skye Bank Plc. Trading in the shares of the three banks accounted for 629.968 million shares worth N3.414 billion exchanged by investors in 2,418 deals contributing 41.69% to the total equity turnover volume recorded during the week.
Forty-three (43) equities appreciated in prices during the week higher than thirty-four (34) equities of the preceding week. Twenty-five (25) equities depreciated in price lower than forty-six (46) equities of the preceding week, while one hundred and twenty eight (128) equities remained constant higher than one hundred and sixteen (116) equities of the preceding week.
