Reducing Carbon Emissions: Strategies for Environmental Resilience

The current global challenge of climate change necessitates immediate attention and action. Its adverse effects are already evident and are projected to intensify in the years ahead. Central to this issue is the alarming increase in carbon emissions, particularly CO2, which may contribute to severe consequences, including extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and biodiversity loss.

Beyond mere words and buzzword on the pursuit for a sustainable future, it is imperative that organisations take deliberate actions towards a more environmentally friendly tomorrow.

Advocating Carbon Neutrality

With climate action as one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), carbon neutrality, or achieving net-zero carbon emissions is paramount. Urgent action is essential, as human activities have rapidly accelerated global warming. Nigeria as one of the signatories to the Paris Agreement recognises that the transition to low-emission development is essential for achieving sustainable economic growth through pathways that yield reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Natural gas will play a major role as a transition fuel for reducing carbon emissions, thereby promoting economic, social, and environmental development, in line with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world must halve its global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050 to limit global warming to an innocuous 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Achieving carbon neutrality requires collaborative efforts from individuals, businesses, and governments, promising a healthier and more sustainable future for all.

Collective Responsibility in Reducing Carbon Footprints

While individual efforts are significant, systemic changes are indispensable to meet the required emissions reduction. Governments play a pivotal role in setting ambitious climate targets and implementing policies that facilitate a transition to a low-carbon economy. Businesses also have a responsibility to enhance energy efficiency, invest in renewable energy, and develop sustainable products and services.

Charting a Brighter Future in Carbon Emissions Reduction

There is growing global consensus on the necessity of addressing climate change, leading to substantial investments by governments and businesses in clean energy and energy efficiency technologies. Sub-Saharan Africa has a significant opportunity to reduce carbon emissions by transitioning to natural gas and affordable renewable energy sources.

The Role of Natural Gas in Carbon Reduction

Compared to coal and oil, natural gas is a more environmentally friendly fossil fuel due to its lower greenhouse gas emissions when used for electricity generation and heating. Its versatility allows for various applications, making it a valuable energy source that can replace more carbon-intensive fuels. Natural gas plays a crucial transitional role in our journey towards renewable energy due to its lower carbon content.

Axxela’s Leading Role in enabling a Sustainable Future

Axxela’s business activities in natural gas distribution is playing a significant role in fostering carbon emissions reduction. This is achieved by converting customers using heavy fossil fuels to natural gas, Axxela has recorded considerable emission savings and achieved over 700,000 tonnes of CO2 reduction annually.

In our 2022 Sustainability Report, which highlights significant achievements in carbon emissions reduction and underscores our commitment to sustainable energy operations. The report showcases Axxela’s noteworthy accomplishments, emphasising its dedication to environmental responsibility. Notably, we achieved a remarkable 42.75% reduction in direct CO2 emissions, a 31.25% reduction in indirect CO2 emissions between 2021 and 2022, a 24% reduction in energy consumption within the organisation, and an 11% reduction in total energy consumption.

Axxela stands as a beacon of hope in the transition story, building and contributing to a brighter, greener, and more sustainable future through our product offerings and our operations.
