Nigeria’s e-Payment Transactions Grew by 17.7% Y/Y in Q1 2025

According to data from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), electronic payment transactions in Nigeria surged to ₦284.99 trillion in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, reflecting a 17.7% year-on-year increase compared to the ₦234.49 trillion recorded in the same period of 2024. Additionally, Point-of-Sale (PoS) transactions experienced a dramatic rise, reaching ₦10.45 trillion in Q1 2025—a 209% increase from the ₦3.62 trillion recorded in Q1 2024.

A breakdown of the three-month performance reveals that the highest transaction value occurred in January, when Nigerians conducted transactions worth ₦100 trillion via electronic platforms. In February, transaction value stood at ₦88.8 trillion, before climbing again to ₦96 trillion in March.

NIBSS data also showed that the volume of electronic payments followed a similar trend. In January, the number of transactions across all electronic platforms hit 792 million, before dipping slightly to 687.5 million in February, and rising again to 735.5 million in March.
