Nigerian Equities Open Week Bearish -0.5% on Losses in Blue Chips

EQUITIES

The domestic equities market kicked off the week on a bearish note, as losses in BUACEMENT (-2.5%), ACCESSCORP (-7.5%), INTBREW (-9.9%), OANDO (-4.3%) and FIDSON (-9.0%) dragged the All-Share Index lower by 0.5% to 247,238.75 points. Consequently, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled at +7.8% and +58.9%, respectively.

The total volume traded declined by 15.1% to 480.02 million units, valued at NGN51.12 billion, and exchanged in 63,980 deals. ACCESSCORP was the most traded stock by volume at 47.57 million units, while ARADEL was the most traded stock by value at NGN27.57 billion, respectively.

Analysing by sectors, the Insurance (-1.7%), Consumer Goods (-1.1%), Oil & Gas (-0.1%) and Industrial Goods (-0.1%) indices declined, while the Banking Index (+0.8%) closed on a positive note.

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was negative (0.8x), as 26 tickers gained relative to 31 losers. TRANSPOWER (-10.0%) and FIDSON (-9.0%) led the laggards, while THOMASWY (+9.9%) and LASACO (+9.9%) posted the most significant gains of the day.

CURRENCY

The official FX rate depreciated by 0.1% to NGN1,363.92/USD

MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME

The overnight lending rate expanded by 13bps to 22.3% in the absence of any significant pressure in the system.
The Treasury bill secondary market traded on a bullish note as the average yield contracted by 10bps to 18.2%.

Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-6bps), mid (-6bps) and long (-14bps) segments, driven by demand for the 80DTM (-16bps), 115DTM (-27bps) and 283DTM (-40bps) bills, respectively. Similarly, the average yield contracted by 5bps to 21.3% in the OMO segment.

Elsewhere, the FGN bond secondary market traded on bullish note as the average yield contracted by 11bps to 17.1%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-2bps), mid (-26bps) and long (-7bps) segments, driven by demand for the MAR-2027 (-4bps), APR-2032 (-43bps) and APR-2037 (-24bps) bills, respectively.
