Nigerian Bourse Gains +0.3% on Gains in Blue Chips

EQUITIES

The domestic bourse closed today’s trading session on a positive note, as gains in HBMNG (+6.8%), DANGSUGAR (+6.2%) and TRANSCORP (+3.6%) caused the All-Share Index to close higher by 0.3% to 247,984.55 points. Consequently, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns edged higher to +8.1% and +59.4%, respectively.

The total volume traded advanced by 41.0% to 676.92 million units, valued at NGN36.43 billion, and exchanged in 55,412 deals. ACCESSCORP was the most traded stock by volume at 87.54 million units, while HBMNG was the most traded stock by value at NGN6.83 billion.

On sectors, performance was positive as the Insurance (+2.3%), Industrial Goods (+1.2%), Consumer Goods (+0.6%), Banking (+0.1%) and Oil & Gas (+0.1%) indices advanced.

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was positive (1.4x), as 33 tickers gained relative to 24 losers. LASACO (+10.0%) and LINKASSURE (+9.9%) led the gainers, while MEYER (-10.0%) and MECURE (-9.9%) posted the most significant losses of the day.

CURRENCY

The official FX rate depreciated by 4bps to NGN1,364.44/USD.

MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME

The overnight lending rate contracted by 6bps to 22.2%, following inflows from OMO maturities (NGN2.19 trillion).

The Treasury bill secondary market traded on a bullish note as the average yield contracted by 2bps to 18.2%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the mid (-3bps) and long (-4bps) segments, driven by demand for the 114DTM (-23bps) and 233DTM (-36bps) bills, respectively but expanded at the short (+4bps) end driven by sell pressures on the 72DTM (+18bps) bill. Meanwhile, the average yield remained unchanged at 21.3% in the OMO segment.

The FGN bond secondary market traded on a bullish note as the average yield contracted by 6bps to 17.0%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-9bps), mid (-2bps) and long (-5bps) segments, driven by buying interests in the FEB-2028 (-24bps), MAR-2035 (-7bps) and APR-2049 (-34bps) bills, respectively.
