EQUITIES
Bearish sentiments dominated the local bourse today as losses in HBMNG (-4.0%), FIRSTHOLDCO (-4.0%), and ZENITHBANK (-3.6%) caused a 0.7% decline in the All-Share Index to 245,386.00 points. Consequently, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled lower at +7.0% and +57.7%, respectively.
Notably, the total volume traded advanced by 177.0% to 2.10 billion units, valued at NGN230.83 billion, and exchanged in 48,231 deals. FIRSTHOLDCO was the most traded stock by volume and value at 1.57 billion units and NGN196.20 billion, respectively.
Sectoral performance was negative as the Insurance (-2.3%), Banking (-2.0%), Consumer Goods (-1.1%) and Industrial Goods (-0.7%) indices closed lower, while the Oil & Gas index closed flat.
As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was negative (0.4x), as 17 tickers gained relative to 44 losers. TRIPPLEG (-10.0%) and LASACO (-9.9%) led the laggards, while LEGENDINT (+8.6%) and DAARCOMM (+7.3%) posted the most significant gains of the day.
CURRENCY
The official FX rate depreciated by 0.2% to NGN1,367.28/USD.
MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME
The overnight lending rate expanded by 22bps to 22.4%, following NTB auction debits (NGN1.25 trillion).
Activities in the Treasury bills secondary market were quiet, albeit with a bullish tilt as the average yield contracted by 1bp to 18.2%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-1bp), mid (-1bp) and long (-1bp) segments, due to demand for the 77DTM (-1bp), 161DTM (-1bp) and 322DTM (-5bps) bills, respectively. Likewise, the average yield contracted by 1bp to 21.3% in the OMO segment.
The FGN bond secondary market traded on a bullish note as the average yield contracted by 8bps to 16.9%. Across the benchmark curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-9bps), mid (-10bps) and long (-5bps) segments, due to buying interests in the FEB-2031 (-32bps), JUL-2034 (-15bps) and JUN-2038 (-19bps) bonds, respectively.
