EQUITIES
The Nigerian equities market closed today on a positive note as gains in FIRSTHOLDCO (+2.2%), ZENITHBANK (+0.8%), STANBIC (+1.4%) and WEMABANK (+6.2%) spurred a 0.1% increase in the All-Share Index to 245,209.34 points. Consequently, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled at -3bps and +57.6%, respectively.
The total volume traded declined by 35.5% to 531.77 million units, valued at NGN20.46 billion, and exchanged in 44,826 deals. FCMB was the most traded stock by volume at 131.74 million units while FIRSTHOLDCO was the most traded stock by value at NGN5.95 billion.
Sectoral performance was broadly positive as the Banking (+0.6%), Consumer Goods (+0.2%) and Oil & Gas (+0.1%) indices closed higher while the Insurance (-0.9%) index declined. The Industrial Goods index closed flat.
As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was negative (0.7x), as 24 tickers gained relative to 33 losers. ETERNA (+10.0%) and AVACAP (+9.6%) led the gainers, while ETI (-10.0%) and CHELLARAM (-9.9%) posted the most significant losses of the day.
CURRENCY
The official FX rate depreciated by 0.1% to NGN1,365.40/USD.
MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME
The overnight lending rate contracted by 2bps to 22.1% in the absence of any significant funding pressures on the system.
The Treasury bill secondary market traded on a bullish note, as the average yield contracted by 1bp to 18.1%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-7bps) end, driven by demand for the 84DTM (-38bps) bill but expanded at the mid (+1bp) and long (+2bps) segments driven by sell pressures on the 175DTM (+38bps) and 301DTM (+18bps) bills, respectively. Conversely, the average yield expanded by 2bps to 21.4% in the OMO segment.
Elsewhere, activities in the FGN bond secondary market were quiet albeit with a bearish tilt as the average yield expanded by 1bp to 16.6%. Across the curve, the average yield expanded at the short (+2bps) and long (+2bps) ends driven by selloffs of the FEB-2031 (+3bps) and JUN-2038 (+6bps) bonds, respectively but closed flat at the mid segment.
