Nigerian Equities Trade Lower -1.1% on Losses in Blue Chips

EQUITIES

The Nigerian equities market closed today’s trading session on a bearish note, as losses in BUAFOODS (-10.0%), HBMNG (-2.5%), UNILEVER (-10.0%), and ZENITHBANK (-1.3%) caused the All-Share Index to close lower by 1.1% to 243,967.09 points. Consequently, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled at 0.5% and +56.8%, respectively.

The total volume traded declined by 62.8% to 1.46 billion units, valued at NGN20.94 billion, and exchanged in 39,085 deals. FTGINSURE was the most traded stock by volume at 853.16 million units, while FIRSTHOLDCO was the most traded stock by value at NGN3.90 billion.

Sectoral performance was mixed as the Consumer Goods (-4.9%), Industrial Goods (-0.4%), and Banking (-0.3) indices declined, while the Insurance (+0.7%) index advanced. The Oil & Gas index closed flat.

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was neutral (1.0x), as 28 tickers gained relative to 27 losers. BUAFOODS (-10.0%) and UNILEVER (-10.0%) led the laggards, while INTENEGINS (+10.0%) and ETI (+10.0%) posted the most significant gains of the day.

CURRENCY

The official FX rate appreciated by 0.3% to NGN1,360.45/USD.

MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME

The overnight lending rate remained unchanged at 22.1%.

Activities in the Treasury bill secondary market were calm albeit with a bullish undertone, as the average yield contracted by 1bp to 18.1%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-1bp), mid (-1bp) and long (-1bp) segments, driven by demand for the 85DTM (-1bp), 176DTM (-1bp) and 351DTM (-1bp) bills, respectively. Meanwhile, the average yield contracted by 5bps to 21.3% in the OMO segment.

The FGN bond secondary market traded on a quiet note albeit with a bearish tilt as the average yield expanded by 1bp to 16.7%. Across the benchmark curve, the average yield expanded at the mid (+1bp) and long (+2bps) segments, driven by profit taking activities on the JUN-2033 (+7bps) and ARP-2037 (+11bps) bonds, respectively. The short end closed flat.
