Bears Sustain Hold as Nigerian Bourse Declines -0.4% on Bellwether Counters

EQUITIES

Bearish sentiments dominated the local bourse today as losses in HBMNG (-4.6%), ZENITHBANK (-2.2%) and UNILEVER (-10.0%) led to a 0.4% decrease in the All-Share Index to 243,017.38 points. Consequently, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled at -0.9% and +56.2%, respectively.

The total volume traded advanced by 191.2% to 4.24 billion units, valued at NGN32.38 billion, and exchanged in 41,454 deals. CORNERST was the most traded stock by volume and value at 3.64 billion units and NGN18.37 billion, respectively.

Sectoral performance was negative as the Consumer Goods (-1.2%), Insurance (-0.6%), Banking (-0.3%) and Oil & Gas (-0.1%) indices declined, while the Industrial Goods Index closed flat.

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was negative (0.4x), as 15 tickers gained relative to 41 losers. UNILEVER (-10.0%) and CHELLARAM (-9.7%) led the laggards, while INTENEGINS (+10.0%) and JOHNHOLT (+9.9%) posted the most significant gains of the day.

CURRENCY

The official FX rate appreciated by 0.2% to NGN1,357.64/USD.

MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME

The overnight lending rate expanded by 1bp to 22.1%, following NTB PMA debits (NGN1.46 trillion).

The Treasury bill secondary market traded on a quiet note, as the average yield remained unchanged at 18.1%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-1bp) and mid (-3bps) segments, driven by demand for the 84DTM (-1bp) and 154DTM (-21bps) bills, respectively but expanded at the long (+2bps) end driven by sell pressures on the 217DTM (+24bps) bill. The average yield contracted by 4bps to 21.3% in the OMO segment.

Elsewhere, activities in the FGN bond secondary market were bearish as the average yield expanded by 3bps to 16.8%. Across the curve, the average yield expanded at the short (+6bps) and long (+3bps) ends driven by selloffs of the FEB-2031 (+23bps) and JUN-2038 (+14bps) bonds, respectively. The average yield closed flat at the mid segment.
