FIRSTHOLDCO, Other Banking Counters Drag Nigerian Bourse to Extend Bearish Run -0.4%

EQUITIES

The domestic bourse closed today’s trading session on a bearish note, as losses in FIRSTHOLDCO (-5.7%), FIDELITYBK (-6.6%), UNILEVER (-3.6%), and GTCO (-0.4%) caused the All-Share Index to close lower by 0.4% to 241,613.48 points. Consequently, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled at -1.5% and +55.3%, respectively.

The total volume traded declined by 67.7% to 429.84 million units, valued at NGN27.48 billion, and exchanged in 35,683 deals. STERLINGNG was the most traded stock by volume at 51.57 million units, while MTNN was the most traded stock by value at NGN9.76 billion.

Analysing by sector, the Banking (-1.8%) and Consumer Goods (-0.1%) indices declined, while the Industrial Goods, Insurance, and Oil & Gas indices closed flat. 

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was negative (0.6x), as 22 tickers gained relative to 37 losers. REDSTAREX (-10.0%) and TRANSEXPR (-9.9%) led the laggards, while HMCALL (+10.0%) and VERITASKAP (+7.1%) posted the most significant gains of the day.

CURRENCY

The official FX rate depreciated by 2bps to NGN1,350.46/USD.

MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME

The overnight lending rate expanded by 1bp to 22.2% despite inflow from OMO maturities (NGN2.22 trillion).

The Treasury bill secondary market traded on a bullish note as the average yield contracted by 1bp to 18.6%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-1bp) and long (-2bps) ends, driven by buying activities on the 79DTM (-1bp) and 359DTM (-23bps) bills, respectively, but expanded at the mid (+1bp) end due to sell pressure on the 114DTM (+15bps) bill. Meanwhile, the average yield contracted by 8bps to 21.2% in the OMO segment.

The FGN bond secondary market traded on a bullish note as the average yield contracted by 4bps to 16.7%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the mid (-10bps) and long (-4bps) segments, driven by buying activities on the MAY-2033 (-12bps) and APR-2037(-19bps) bonds, respectively, but closed flat at the short end.
