Nigerian Equities Trade Bullish +0.2%, Buoyed by Blue Chips

EQUITIES

The Nigerian equities market closed today’s trading session on a bullish note, as gains in MTNN (+0.5%), TRANSCORP (+4.1%), NB (+5.2%), and UBA (+1.7%) caused the All-Share index to close higher by 0.2% to 244,791.80 points. Consequently, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled higher at +0.2% and +57.3%, respectively.

The total volume traded advanced by 31.1% to 662.43 million units, valued at NGN37.45 billion, and exchanged in 63,271 deals. STERLINGNG was the most traded stock by volume at 73.63 million units, while GTCO was the most traded stock by value at NGN5.27 billion.

Analysing by sector, the Insurance (+1.6%), Consumer Goods (+0.8%) and Banking (+0.2%) indices advanced, while the Industrial Goods and Oil & Gas indices closed flat. 

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was positive (1.3x), as 34 tickers gained relative to 26 losers. SOVRENINS (+9.7%) and CHAMPION (+9.5%) led the gainers, while JOHNHOLT (-9.9%) and LIVINGTRUST (-9.8%) posted the most significant losses of the day.

CURRENCY

The official FX rate appreciated by 2bps to NGN1,330.13/USD.

MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME

The overnight lending rate contracted by 12bps to 22.2% in the absence of any significant funding pressure on the system.

Activities in the Treasury bill secondary market were calm albeit with a bullish undertone, as the average yield contracted by 1bp to 18.8%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-1bp), mid (-1bp) and long (-1bp) segments, driven by demand for the 92DTM (-1bp), 120DTM (-2bps) and 351DTM (-3bps) bills. Meanwhile, the average yield contracted by 17bps to 20.1% in the OMO segment.

Elsewhere, the FGN bond secondary market closed flat as the average yield remained unchanged at 16.3%.
