Nigerian Bourse Extends Bearish Run -0.8%, Dragged by Bellwether Counters

EQUITIES

The local bourse extended its losing streak today to seven consecutive sessions, as profit-taking activities in ARADEL (-10.0%), MTNN (-3.5%), STANBIC (-2.4%) and FIDELITYBK (-5.0%) led to a 0.8% decline in the All-Share Index to 248,042.50 points. Consequently, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled lower at -1.3% and +59.4%, respectively.

The total volume traded advanced by 10.1% to 492.23 million units, valued at NGN38.02 billion, and exchanged in 38,711 deals. ZENITHBANK was the most traded stock by volume at 47.80 million units while PRESCO was the most traded stock by value at NGN7.46 billion.

Sectoral performance was broadly negative as the Oil & Gas (-3.9%), Insurance (-0.4%) and Banking (-0.2%) indices declined while the Consumer Goods (+0.1%) index advanced. The Industrial Goods index closed flat.

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was negative (0.8x), as 26 tickers gained relative to 31 losers. ETRANZACT (+10.0%) and LIVESTOCK (+9.1%) led the gainers while ETERNA (-10.0%) and ARADEL (-10.0%) posted the most significant losses of the day.
 
CURRENCY

The official FX rate depreciated by 0.1% to NGN1,332.61/USD.

MONEY MARKET & FIXED INCOME

The overnight lending rate expanded by 17bps to 20.8%, in the absence of any significant inflows into the system.

The Treasury bill secondary market traded on a quiet note as the average yield remained unchanged at 17.9%. Across the curve, the average yield contracted at the short (-1bp) and mid (-1bp) segments, driven by demand for the 91DTM (-1bp) and 182DTM (-1bp) bills, respectively, but remained unchanged at the long end. Meanwhile, the average yield expanded by 5bps to 18.6% in the OMO segment.

Elsewhere, activities in the FGN bond secondary market were quiet as the average yield remained unchanged at 15.8%.
