The June 2025 Gas Production Status Report released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) shows that Nigeria’s total gas production for the month stood at 236,962.37 million standard cubic feet (MMscf)—a 17.36% year-on-year (y/y) increase from 201,903.46 MMscf recorded in June 2024. Associated Gas (AG)—natural gas produced alongside crude oil—accounted for 121,214.79 MMscf, representing a 5% y/y increase from 114,939.81 MMscf in June 2024.

Non-Associated Gas (NAG)—produced from gas fields independent of crude oil—came in at 116,012.90 MMscf, significantly up from 86,963.66 MMscf in the corresponding period of 2024. However, on a month-on-month (m/m) basis, total gas production in June 2025 declined by 1.32% from the 240,125.67 MMscf recorded in May 2025.

In  June 2025, domestic gas sales rose by 17.56% year-on-year (y/y) to 62,282.77 million standard cubic feet MMscf), up from 52,979.84 MMscf in June 2024. Export gas sales also recorded strong growth, increasing by 18.90% y/y to 88,076.14 MMscf. After experiencing two consecutive monthly declines of -2.34% in April and -10.61% in May 2025, domestic gas sales rebounded in June, registering an 8.70% month-on-month m/m) increase. Export sales continued their steady upward trend, rising by 2.85% m/m in June, following increases of 2.72% in May and 3.61% in April. Despite the recovery, domestic gas sales accounted for just 41.4% of total gas sales in June, while exports made up 58.6%. This ongoing disparity reflects the fading impact of the Federal Government’s Q4 2024 ban on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports—a policy initially introduced to boost local supply and curb rising domestic LPG prices.

To meet growing demand—driven by the Federal Government’s push for the adoption of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) in cooking, power generation, and transportation, domestic gas supply must expand more rapidly than current consumption levels. Achieving this requires stronger policy support and targeted investments to boost production capacity. In this context, initiatives like the Presidential CNG Initiative which seeks to promote CNG as an alternative transport fuel—are expected to drive widespread adoption and significantly enhance domestic gas utilization
